Topics Discussed in this Episode:
-
The problems that people have related to their phone habits
-
The phone features that trigger dopamine in our brains
-
The effects of prolonged use of mobile phones to our attention span and our ability to think deeply
-
The technology triage
-
The 7 phone habits of highly effective people
Key Takeaways:
-
Spending lots of time on our phone interferes with our ability to think critically and have creative thoughts.
-
Dopamine can establish habits that turn into addictions, including how we use our phones.
-
When we feel anxious when we’re separated from our phones, that’s because we’ve been conditioned to release adrenaline and cortisol when we can’t check them.
-
Our brains are constantly changing in response to what we do.
-
Our brain’s default is that it would prefer to be distractible. It’s actually extremely hard to train our brains to focus. When you’re spending a lot of time on your phone and you’re presented with so many distractions, you’re tiring out the areas of your brain that are able to maintain focus, and you’re encouraging its preferred state of distraction.
Action Steps:
-
Become aware of your automatic responses to your phone and engage your conscious mind so that your consciousness can fight back against these habits.
-
Set boundaries and walls within yourself and with your environment when it comes to using your phone to prevent yourself from slipping into automatic response.
-
Use a time-tracking app to monitor your phone habits.
-
Establish healthy phone routines.
Catherine said:
“Once you recognize what your particular issue is (with your phone), then you’ll start to catch yourself going into these dopamine-fueled cycles, and that’s when you can start to build better boundaries… to make it harder for you to slip into these automatic behaviors.”
“It’s just amazing to realize that our bodies and brains have been hijacked without us recognizing what’s happening, and then we’re surprised when we find our phone in our hands or when we see someone check their phone in the middle of a conversation…”
