What is digestion?

It’s the process of breaking down food into small molecules of nutrients to be absorbed in the bloodstream for energy, growth and cell repair. It starts in the mouth and finishes once we’ve processed the food and excreted the waste. Digestion is a complex process and is often overlooked when we think about health.

What does poor digestion look like?

You might be experiencing acid reflux, heartburn, belching, gas, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome and abdominal pains. Often, people learn to live with these symptoms, but these things can be easily avoided and will often worsen if untreated. As well as being uncomfortable, poor digestion can interfere with your sleep, your energy levels and everyday life. It might even get in the way of your fitness routine. Crucially, you might not realise it, but it’s possible you aren’t absorbing all the nutrients from your food either due to poor digestion, eating hurriedly or eating when stressed.

How to optimise your digestion

The first thing is nutrition. What you eat will have a profound impact on your digestive health. Eating a diet that is personal to you is so important, not just for digestion but for sleep, mental health, energy, body composition and fitness. Eating a diet based on your unique DNA will enable you to optimise your digestive health and ensure you get all the nutrition from your food.

The second thing relates to hormones, vitamins and minerals. Using a simple, painless home blood kit, we test for 10 markers including thyroid, cholesterol, vitamin D3 and B12 and folate. We can quickly address these issues by testing to see if levels are out of range and supplementing where required.

The third thing is fixing any issues that reside in the gut. A lack of microbial diversity in the gut has been linked with depression, mood disorders, autoimmune conditions such as eczema and asthma and even autism. The final thing is changing how you eat – the way you prepare for food, how long you take to chew, whether you prepare food yourself, the portion size, whether you use large plates or bowls, posture and how relaxed you are.
