What is body composition?

It’s how your body is composed, i.e. what percentage is bones, fat, water and muscle. Body composition is affected by genetics, your environment, your diet, your exercise and movement levels, sleep, hormones and to some degree, your age.

The problems with body composition

Poor body composition usually refers to being underweight or overweight. It can also refer to lack of strength. Most people who have concerns with their body composition consider themselves to be overweight, so I’ll focus on that here. If you’re suffering from poor body composition, you’re probably feeling tired all the time, frustrated about your weight, suffer from low self-esteem and low body confidence. You might be confused about the mixed messages put about in the media, and frustrated with the one-size-fits-all approach to dieting and fitness. You may be experiencing ‘failure fatigue’ from too many diets that haven’t worked, and feel as though your weight (and your health) are spiralling out of control.

How to optimise your body composition

The first thing is nutrition. What you eat will have a profound impact on your body composition. Eating a diet that is personal to you is so important, not just for body composition, but for sleep, mental health, energy, digestion and fitness. Eating a diet based on your unique DNA will enable you to maintain a healthy weight and optimise your health and wellbeing.

The second thing relates to hormones, vitamins and minerals. Using a simple, painless home blood kit, we test for 7 markers including vitamin D3 and B12, calcium, iron, testosterone and HbA1c (diabetes). We can quickly address these issues by testing to see if levels are out of range and supplementing where required.

The third thing is exercise and movement. Exercise can be broken down into low, medium and high intensity and is the perfect 1-2 combo for successfully maintaining your body composition. The DNA test will tell you the ideal type of exercise for your genotype, so you get maximum benefit from the time you spend exercising. Constant daily life movement will help your body find it’s natural set point.

The fourth thing is fixing any issues that reside in the gut. A lack of microbial diversity in the gut has been linked with depression, mood disorders, autoimmune conditions such as eczema and asthma and even autism. We include a course of kefir as part of the package to repopulate your gut with good bacteria.

The final thing is make it personal. Forget about outdated one-size-fits-all approaches, or what’s worked for your colleague at work – we all respond differently and have different sensitivities. Counting calories to lose weight is also outdated. DNA testing will highlight exactly the right type of nutrition plan for you based on your unique genes.
